From start to finish this album is flawless. Truly my favourite album of all time!
Individual Track Breakdown
1. Pure morning (4:14)
Pure morning is the opening song of the album 'without you i'm nothing'. Like most PLACEBO songs it contains obscure lyrics and themes. It delves into the world of drugs and promiscuous sex. The song includes a strong synthetic drum and piano sound , with regular instruments played softly underneath. The music video depicts a rather beautiful Brian Molko Preparing to leap from a multi-story building. It opens up the album magnificently and shows PLACEBO had come a long way from their 'teenage angst' days.
2. Brick Shithouse (3:17)
Brick shithouse shows how new and experimental 'without you i'm nothing' is. It contains a strong industrial drum/guitar riff that can only be fully appreciated through headphones. The song is a good listen and talks a bit about the aggression of lovers. However through the static moans of Molko little of the lyrics can be heard! A great song with so much potential!
3. You Don't Care About Us (3:57)
You don't care about us is mainly a cry about oppression based on age and sexuality. The song seems very 90's, with a light but memorable introduction followed by a heavy chorus. This song appears to be a wannabe rock anthem. I am sad to say that hasn't reached that standard but is still a beautiful composition.
4. Ask For Answers (5:18)
Ask for answers has a very complex contrast of emotions. It has an acoustic feel with a slow and charming base riff. This song is where the album becomes about passion and lust as well as being lost and oppressed. The vocals in this song spark plenty of feeling in an otherwise dull world! I love it!
5. Without You I'm Nothing (4:08)
Without You I'm Nothing is the title song of this album. It has been put together rather strangely and contains a mass of though-provoking lyrics. Without You I'm Nothing has been recently re-released featuring David Bowie. However i preferred the original! (sorry bowie) What is strange about this song is the lack of a chorus.
6. Allergic (To Thoughts Of Mother Earth) (3:48)
Allergic is one of the anthems of 'Without You I'm Nothing' It has a great and powerful chorus powered with a synthesized guitar and beautifully crafted lyrics. This song heard live is a real treat!
7. The crawl (2:58)
The crawl is more of a filler song than the rest. It is very slow moving and has no real sense of emotion powering it. However it is themed towards the depression induced by promiscuity. It is not the best song on the album but it is definitely worth the listen!
8. Every You Every Me (3:33)
Every You Every Me is one of the happier songs on the album and has become one of their key stadium fillers. The song manages to put a light spin on the effects of love and shows how it is okay to risk everything for happiness. This song featured on the movie 'cruel intentions'!
9. My Sweet Prince (5:44)
My Sweet Prince is definitely the saddest song on the album. It describes the pain and destruction at the loss of a loved one. The song has a very slow moving drum beat that combined with the piercing vocals tears into the listener and consumes them. The song however is particularly long.
10. Summer's Gone (3:05)
Summer's Gone is my least favourite song of the album. The audio has a 'blurry' feel which doesn't really appear to me. However the lyrics are very interesting and inspirational. I must admit I do tend to skip this song on my regular listen of the album.
11. Scared Of Girls (3:00)
Scared Of Girls was a song I initially ignored. It is a fast-moving rock song which despite the title talks about girls and experiences with them. After listening to the song several times i can see the beauty in it.
